Ethitex: allowing researchers to share tissue resources.

Tissue sharing - the ethical approach to animal research.

Ethitex is an e-business tool that allows researchers to share tissue resources with other researchers.

Ethitex is designed to help researchers to comply with the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) edict: "Where practicable, tissue from animals being killed should be shared among investigators and teachers..."1. Whilst the NHMRC's jurisdiction is Australian, the values that inspire this edict are held throughout the world.

A research institution will license Ethitex for the benefit of all researchers that are associated with the institution. Resources will be shared within the institution as well as across institution boundaries. It will even be possible to share rare resources internationally.

Benefits

Ethitex will provide the following benefits to participating institutions:

  • Reduction in the number of animals sacrificed

The ethically desirable outcome. Given the choice, the majority of researchers would prefer not to have to sacrifice animals to support research - sharing resources via Ethitex will be preferable for these researchers. In addition, there are reduced costs by making better use of those animals that are being sacrificed.

  • Recognition of the institution's commitment to ethics in research

  • Reduced animal holding costs

  • Researchers have access to resources that might not otherwise be available and/or justifiable on cost and/or ethical grounds

  • Possible reduction in compliance costs

Use of Ethitex establishes that reasonable steps are taken to ensure that there are no other sources of the required resource available. Where sharing is established, use of Ethitex provides additional value from a proposed sacrifice. Use of tissue from pre-deceased animals may simplify the measures required to comply with the institution's code of practice.
